Hi long time since I have been on this site

the following was copied  =

CALEDONIA herself survived the Second World War – serving as HMS GOATFELL, chiefly on minesweeping duties, though she also relieved Channel steamers for Dunkirk.

Could anyone please explain what 'relieved Channel steamers for Dunkirk' means?
As always thanks in advance for any help.

I am not quite sure what is meant.  The GOATFELL, along with other ships of the 11th Minesweeping Flotilla, were based in the Clyde at the time of the evacuation of Dunkirk, so didn't "relieve" anybody for the operation.  However, in June 1940, after the evacuation was complete, the 11th MSF (including Goatfell), were shifted to Dover to replace the paddle 'sweepers that had been lost.
