Hi - I think this may be one for Philonauticus...

I have been asked by a family friend in  Canada to research her grandfather's family history.  She has a photograph of him in RN uniform whilst serving on HMS Wallaroo between 1897-1900 and I have now received his serice records.  Can someone tell me where he might have served/been based:
HMS Wildfire 13.10.1896-12.02.1897
HMS Wallaroo 28.05.1897-13.06.1900
HMS Revenge18.04.1901-17.06.1901
HMS Galatea 27.06.1901-04.07.1902.
In between times he was at Pembroke II
His record indicates he was invalided in 1902 although I have no further information (is there any way of finding out why he was invalided?).

many thnaks in anticipation

WILDFIRE - shore depot/base at Sheerness; in 1897 it was actually housed onboard the former 450 ton yacht Hiawatha, taken over by the Navy to use as a base ship.

WALLAROO - cruiser, built by Armstrong (Tyneside)being launched 5 Feb. 1890
2575 tons  278ft x 41ft  armed 8 x 4.7in guns
As the name suggests, it was actually paid for by Australia (they were still a colony at the time) and she served in Aussie waters during her career.
For a photo of her see:

(you will have to scroll down to the bottom of the page)

REVENGE in 1901 was a battleship.  Built by Palmer (Tyneside) launched in November 1892.  1`4150 tons   410ft x 75ft
armed 4 x 13.5in guns
In April 1901 she was being used as a stationary depot ship at Weymouth.

GALATEA = cruiser, built by Napier (Clyde) launched in March 1887.
5600 tons  300ft x 56 ft  armed 2 x 9.2in guns
in 1901-02 she was based at Hull, being used as a depot ship for the local reserves/Coastguard.

PEMBROKE II was the shore barracks at Chatham
