dumpling ... Cyclops was a depot ship supporting submarines, and although based in Malta at this time, she did move around, to continue to support the subs for various exercises etc. More than one depot ship? - no, not at this time. There was only one submarine flotilla based in the Med between the wars (the 1st Flotilla),which was at Malta, so only one base ship. The concept of having more than one flotilla (& more than one depot ship) was only during wartime. Cyclops was based at Malta throughout his time onboard. During mid-1929 she underwent a major refit at Malta, and re-commissioned 27.9.1929 with a new crew that had been sent out from the UK, having taken passage in the cruiser Lowestoft. She was the depot and support ship for the 1st Sub. flotilla, which at this time consisted of six boats, 5 'L' class and 1 'K' class. Cyclops moved around to support them - this included visits to Catania (1/1930); Palma (3/30); Barcelona and Villefranche (4/30); Argostoli (8/30); Navarin (1/1931). In 5.1931 she returned to UK, shepherding all her boats back to Portsmouth, as they were being replaced. She sailed 18.7.1931 to return to Malta, this time with six new boats of the 'O' and 'R' classes. Again, moved around to support them: Corfu (8/31); Alexandria (10/31); Suda Bay, Crete (10/31); Navarin (1/1932). She returned to UK to pay off in 1932, arriving at Chatham 22.4.1932 |

Hi I'm running out of ways to say 'thank you', but as always it is said with sincerity. |
