OSPREY was the name of the base at Portland between 1948 and 1995.

HMS Osprey was the Anti-Submarine School at Portland, Dorset from 1924 until February 1941. In February 1941 the school transferred to Dunoon, Scotland as a precaution against enemy air attack and to release space for coastal forces. Later in 1941 the school moved to Campbelltown, Scotland where it remained until 1946, when it moved back to Portland. It was known to sailors throughout the RN as the place where their ships “worked up” to a state of readiness.
