Without seeing the man's service record it is difficult to be precise about selective information relating to that record.

However I would guess the man enlisted on a Special Service engagement and if so his official number would have the prefix letters SS or SSX and then the number.

Prior to 21 February 1956 men and boys could enlist for 12 years Special Service from the date of entry of which 7 years over the age of 18 years in addition to whatever period might have been necessary before reaching that age was to be served with the Fleet and the balance with the Royal Fleet Reserve. Men serving on Special Service engagements could at any time during the active service part of their engagement transfer to a Continious Service engagement.

As from 21 February 1956 all men were invited to assimilate themselves into the new engagement structure but they could elect to remain on and serve out their existing engagement.

As I have no idea about the period of service or the mans service record the entry SS Expired could refer to the above situation were he had elected to remain on Special Service post 21 February 1956 and therefore his engagement expired. It could also mean that he had completed his normal period of active service with the Fleet and then transferred to RFR status or it could mean he had completed the full 12 years active and reserve engagement. Dates on the service reord will indicate which of these options is applicable.

G1 - awarded his 1st good conduct badge having completed either 3 years or 4 years qualifying time, depending on his service dates, with a minimum assessment of 'Very Good Conduct' during the two years immediately preceding the award of the badge.

D1 - Deprivation of 1st good conduct badge as the result of miconduct dealt with by a punishment warrant.

R1 - restoration of the 1st good conduct badger afetr man attaining a minimum 6 months reckonable service with his conduct assessed as 'Very Good'.

AB(e) - not immediately recognised but may be able to help on sighting full service record sheet. My e-mail address is carnock@davemallinson.fsnet.co.uk if you require any futher advice.
