I have recently received a copy of my late fathers Naval record. He qualified as a Doctor in April 1940 and joined the RNVR. After the war he transferred to RN until 1960.
The word ''addl.'' appears throughout. For example he left Vanguard (in the Whence column) to an Appointment to Drake aadl with a Station RNH Plymouth. The Cause of Appointment states Addl. D/L 27/6/47.
I see a pattern of departures from ships and then to a shore establishment briefly then to another ship. I am speculating D/L 27/6/47 could mean Date Left meaning the departure from a ship.

Can anyone please advise me what the addl means and what D/L means.

Thank You

I think 'addl' means additional; i.e. additional to the usual ships complement

Thanks very much. I did wonder if it meant additional. Presumably at any time Naval personnel need to get from one part of the world to another and may take passage on a ship, and be 'additional' to the complement. I guess it helps those responsible for pay and rations etc know how many souls they have to feed. Also they need to get their head down somewhere when they leave a ship and are awaiting the arrival of their next one, hence the brief appointments as addl to a shore establishment.
Regards
Peter
