I think 'addl' means additional; i.e. additional to the usual ships complement |

Philo Thanks very much. I did wonder if it meant additional. Presumably at any time Naval personnel need to get from one part of the world to another and may take passage on a ship, and be 'additional' to the complement. I guess it helps those responsible for pay and rations etc know how many souls they have to feed. Also they need to get their head down somewhere when they leave a ship and are awaiting the arrival of their next one, hence the brief appointments as addl to a shore establishment. Regards Peter |
