Posted 28/10/2008 10:33:33 AM | | The trawler ‘Falmouth III’ is just one of the many losses of the Dover Patrol, her loss is now being considered by the MOD for being designated as an official “War Grave” status.
While carrying out her minesweeping duty on 19th November 1915, around the wreck of the Hospital ship “Anglia” she exploded a mine laid by the German Submarine UC-5, which sunk the vessel, on top of the wreck of the hospital ship along with seven Royal Naval Reserve crew.
The hospital ship “Anglia” was sunk on 15th November 1915 while carrying wounded troops back home, taking with her around 159 souls. The wreck of the hospital ship sunk a mile from Folkestone, and is now being stripped by divers, wreck hunting for First World War mementoes and souvenirs among the bones of the dead of the Great War. The Ministry of Defence (Royal Navy) will not designate this wreck as an official “War Grave”, allegedly, as the Anglia’s wreck and cargo salvage rights has been sold off.
The “Falmouth III” remained on top of the hospital shipwreck until she was blown off in a gale, if the “Falmouth III” wreck site could be protected under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986, it seemly is feasible that the protected wreck area could incorporate the wreck site of the Hospital ship, as who knows ‘who is who’, and ‘what is what’ in the wreckage , this seemly could stop the pillaging of the wrecks, that is so upsetting those who remember those whose lives were lost in the sinking of these First Wold War ships.
