MALABAR was the name given to the naval establishment at Bermuda from 1897 until it closed in 1995.  Significance? none really; just another small overseas base in a bit of the empire.

VQ5X26 means nothing to me I'm afraid

Doing an internet search, the callsign VQ5 was apparently used by British forces in east Africa (Uganda), so VQ5X26 may be related to that

Thank you.
VQ5X26 was our call sign in 1962 @ 90(Speke) Sqn Air Training Corps Liverpool (Speke) Airpoort,I have a foto with me at a Morse Key and 1154+1155 behind. BP were surprised as they thought it Canadian or British Empire so Uganda seems good.
I have some info on the reception of the Athenia's sos with a Q: may I enquire?
Best wishes
Stewart

Once again thank you.
Almost finished with my basic research.
Our Father left some details of his being on board HMS ELECTRA as the duty Radio Operator and receiving the SOS from the sinking ATHENIA.We have found amongst his possessions an engraved cigarette case with the following inscrïption...
PRESENTED BY   DONALDSON ATLANTIC LINE LIMITED   OWNERS
I.S.S.  "ATHENIA"   SUNK BY GERMAN SUBMARINE
3RD SEPTEMBER 1939.
Simple question...was this a normal way of thanking those involved with the rescue mission of saving survivors ? If so how many were issued ?
One more question next time will enable me to get on with the dvd memorial.
Many thanks for your kind interest.
Best wishes Stewart

I understand that such mementoes were often given by a grateful owner or captain to rescuers - the Captain of a rescuing ship may receive an engraved watch for example, so a cigarette case would fit.

How many were given out on this occasion, I have absolutely no idea.  The complement of an 'E' class destroyer was 145 men and the Electra was one of two destroyers that picked up survivors from the Athenia, plus I believe there was a merchant ship that assisted.  I cannot believe that the Donaldson Line would have paid out for everyone on these ships to get such a memento.

Many thanks,
a final Q please:HMS PEMBROKE (TEMPEST) from 27th Sep 1934 - 7th Jan 1935. Surely this can't be the sub since that was early 40's ?
You have been of great help since my quals involve Telecomms and Physics and my directions are now more focussed. Well done and thanks again. Best wishes Stewart.

TEMPEST in 1934 - 35 was a World War One 'R' class destroyers- she was evidently based at Chatham; Pembroke was the name of the R.N. barracks there and would have been responsible for admin. etc.

Outline details -

armed 3 x 4in 4 x torpedo tubes

She was scrapped in 1937
